Program:
Today’s presentations are Directors Reports and reports were made by the following:

Club Service – Gordon Brown.
Our Club Service Group as you know is responsible for the running of the club. The POD is
generally working well. We have to emphasize that whoever is the Sergeant At Arms for the
meeting is responsible for the setting up and taking down of everything for that particular
meeting. There is a schedule for the Sergeant at Arms and a copy is posted inside the box. Also
if you are scheduled to do the reporting (Rotateller) then please make sure if you are not going
to be at the meeting then arrange for someone else to do it for you.
We try to have some kind of fellowship or other event every month. The last event was the
fundraiser at Maddy's. We had scheduled a Presidents Pool Party last month, but it didn't
happen as too many people were busy at other events. We will be arranging an event for later
this month which will probably be announced by the end of this week. If you have any ideas for
an event, then please let me know. In October is the District Convention and in November (of
course) is the TV Auction. I have the date for the Christmas Party which is Friday December 9th.
(Special request from Gordon and Peter when an invite to an event is sent out please respond.)
Kevin Manuel is the speaker co-ordinator, so if you have a speaker you would like to invite to
the club please contact Kevin and check which dates are available. Frank Allison is the sick and
visiting contact - so if you are aware of anyone in the club at any time who is sick please
contact Frank and he will arrange for a card to be sent and if appropriate flowers to be sent as
well. If you wish to advertise on our website then Rocco is the person to contact for this.
We have our meetings usually on the second Thursday of the month and they will be on the
calendar on the website - so if any of you would like to attend the meetings then we would be
pleased to see you - just let us know first.

A comment was made that menu issues should be discussed with the restaurant

Community Youth & Vocational Services – Peter Masson for Donna Salamalay
1. Warm Hands (Glove Distribution) Program
Last year we distributed gloves to 17 schools mostly in the Malvern area of
Scarborough
This year we plan to start calling schools end of September and distribute gloves mid
act-early Nov.
Club Service & International Services Directors have been asked to let us know if
members in their teams wish to volunteer to deliver gloves - as was done last year.
2. Adopt a School- Precious Blood - (440 students): Lawrence & Pharmacy
Last year we sent approx. 50 students for an Integrative Thinking Workshop at U of T
downtown -as an alternative to Camp Enterprise.
Touring the university campus starts them thinking about higher education.
Three Meal programs were sponsored via Park Properties' donation. These were
BBQ's.
The Meal Program will continue for the remainder of the year, until next May.
September is Rotary's Education & Literacy Month so it is a good time to focus on the
start-up/Inauguration of our Interact Club (separate from the mentoring activities)
Basil Dias is leading the above.
Members will be notified of the Inauguration event.
3. Paul Harris Scholarships - Set for next June.
Last year sponsored 1.5 scholarships versus 1 scholarship in most years.
Plan at this time is to sponsor 1 scholarship as in the past. We co-operate with the
other four Scarborough clubs and this year (our 20th) our club will be the host club.
We will seek out past scholarship winners to join us at this anniversary event.
The venue is yet to be chosen but the Awards Banquet will be held in early June
before the Atlanta R.I. Convention.
4. Adventure in Citizenship & RYLA
Adventure in Citizenship candidate - Charles Bakic's niece was last year;
James Burchell is the program champion this year. RYLA candidate: Imani Thomas - 2015 Paul Harris scholarship winner went last year; Jacqueline Smith is the program champion this year.
5. Plan is to continue the pipeline for "Worthy Causes" - at the Individual level.
Examples of funding to date: Diapers, a Stroller and Car Seat ;Bike donated and funding for safety helmet/etc. ; Currently evaluating a request for support for an autistic youth while his single
mother pursues her final semester of nursing studies. Individuals are "vetted" by local community agencies - ACSA, Polvcultural, Youthlink/etc.
6. Health Care

7. Environmental

Habitat for Humanity Women's Build at 140 Pinery Trail started this morning. I was
surrounded by a bevy of beauties. We now have lots of volunteers from the five
Scarborough Rotary Clubs, although we could use a few more warm bodies next week
Thursday & Friday.
With Dave Hardy's help, the Institute for New Suburbanism is being launched tomorrow
Thursday Sept. is'" at JC's Banquet Hall at 1686 Ellesmere, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.
We are still working on establishing Rotaract Clubs at U of T Scarborough Campus and at
Centennial College. Contact has been made with a past president of the U of T
Scarborough Rotaract Club, and we should be able to get this going soon. Centennial
College are once again interested in discussing Rotaract, so we're attempting to arrange
a meeting with them.
The Scarborough Business Association which was one ofthe results of Dave's
Scarborough Renewal Campaign, is now launching After -Five Networking. The launch is
on Wednesday September 28, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Bluffer's Park Restaurant,
which is at 7 Brimley Road South. Free Admission and parking, cash bar.

Gerd Wengler advised that he may have a host for the incoming Brazilian students and advised that Park Properties will provide his Christmas Fund will be provided again this year but on the condition that we pursue additional fundraising ideas – the Board must come up with an additional fundraiser going forward. Also reminded us that we need to get the 2017-2018 Board

All the members of the Board were thanked by President Basil. He also responded that our Club cannot rely on the generosity of Park Property in the future. Foundation Walk raised $120k for the District with our club raising over $3k. Basil also asked us to consider new members.

A sound file of this presentation is not available

Next week’s speaker will be: Nevine from the District who will tell us about the RI Inter-country Committees
