Announcements:
  • Jim Boyko advised us about ‘Gates Open’ Home & Garden Tour. This is a fundraiser for The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System Foundation. For more information: www.bluffsgatesopen.com
  • President Basil’s announcements:
  1. We still need a club representative to lead our new auction fund-raiser. At this time we are examining having our auction using e-bay.

  1. We have speakers booked for the remainder of our Rotary year except for May 17th, June 7th and June 14th. We have asked Mandy to reschedule her talk on her recent visit to Nigeria for May 17th, but that’s not confirmed yet. If you know of interesting speakers, please advise Kevin Manuel.

  1. A new Rotary club will soon be chartered, bringing the number of clubs in our District to 56. The Rotary Club of Bay-Bloor will have it’s charter on the evening of Wednesday June 21st at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, 475 Yonge Street. In our usual tradition, our club will gift the new club an item from their “wish list”, probably a Rotary flag.

  1. Our guest speaker on May 24th will be Courtney Fisher, of the Scarborough Rosewood Food Drive. If we would all bring a non-perishable food item to donate at that meeting, it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Our next Board Meeting will be held on Monday May 29th at the Baton Rouge Steakhouse & Bar, Scarborough, at 6:30 pm.

  1. I have spoken to Lynn Wylie, and she has now moved to a home in the Markham/Kingston Road area. Jack had a scare last week, and had to be moved from rehab to the cardiac wing, in Room 912. He is being assessed to determine if he can move to the home Lynn is now in. Our Club Service Group has decided to send the Wylies some taxi coupons; It appears that Becks Taxi is their preferred carrier, so this will be taken care of.

  1. Mike Mushet will soon be sending out an email asking all members to indicate which club group they wish to be in for the next Rotary Year. Please respond as soon as you can so that President-Elect Mike can organize his rotary Year.

  1. We have Dave Lockett from PACT with us today to collect our club’s donation of $2,500.

Marbelous Draw: Mike conducted the draw and asked our guest speaker Lee Soda to draw the ticket which was claimed by Lee(!) She was not able find the mutant marble, but got $5 as a consolation.

Sergeant-At-Arms: Mike (a very busy guy today) just collected Happy Bucks. David donated as being appreciative of all the support our club has given PACT. He was also happy that Premier Kathleen Wynne will be visiting a garden that PACT operate in Toronto. Arthur thought that as Gerd was away he had better ‘step up to the plate’ and tell a joke. It ended with the punch line that in a golf challenge ‘Cardinal Jack Nicholson’ was beaten by ‘Rabbi Tiger Woods’! Peter quizzed the members as to who was made Prime Minister 77 years ago today – the answer being Sir Winston Churchill. Gordon donated as Chelsea will probably win the Premier League title on Friday and TFC are currently top of their league.

Speaker: President Basil introduced our guest speaker Lee Soda from Agincourt Community Services.

Lee thanked us for our support. She gave us an update on the Syrian refugees they have helped and told us that they have helped settle, train and certify over 500 of them and get them into the job market. Most of the jobs being lower paid – cashiers, food handlers etc. The newcomers’ priorities of course being a place to live and a job. One area in Scarborough – the Chester Le community – has challenges. There was a lot of violence there over the recent Easter weekend. (We donated a bicycle to one of the young residents there.) They have a community garden there where youth and seniors work together in a garden they have. On Saturdays they have community kitchen dinners. It is her opinion that there is a need to get to children earlier in the 6 – 12 years old group. Money goes to pre-school year programs and not so much to after school programs. ACS has partnered with Child Development Institute in a program called ‘SNAP’ – Stop Now And Plan. https://www.childdevelop.ca/programs/snap.
