PACT http://pactprogram.ca/ Participation, Acknowledgement, Commitment, and Transformation
  • Dave presented a well-articulated overview of the initiatives engineered and metrics witnessed by preventative measures of proactively helping our at-risk youth as early as primary age, to better arm them against the risks of violence and crime before these vices can take hold.
  • Dave spoke of how rehabilitating a post-incarceration young adult has a general 5% success rate is no match to the preventative initiatives geared towards primary aged level with a 90-95% success rate.
  • Life Coaches, who give of their time as professional business coaches to facilitate the process in ensuring that all candidates are given a second chance to break the cycle.
  • Members were invited to visit the Urban Garden and witness firsthand the influence preventative measures have in action.
  • "Over the past six years, PACT has partnered with the TDSB and TCDSB to expand its Grow-to-Learn program to meet community need; creating and transforming unused, often grey spaces into bountiful organic gardens where children and youth learn about harvesting food, sustainability and community building".
  • Members are encouraged to visit the above link, and are thanked as members of currently 25 rotary clubs who have financially supported this program over many years.
  • 300 kids saved over 17 years is significant, but more needs to be done.
  • Transforming youth is only part of the solution; transforming environments (i.e. access to whole and nutritious foods) and continued change in attitudes towards the recipients is key.

Meeting adjourned with satisfied tummies and a sense of merriment as we concelebrate our motto, "service above self".
