Chris Hawkes of the Maple Leaf organization & Toronto Argonauts.
Chris described the exciting program that was held last year which was a leadership and development opportunity for the young people who were sponsored by our club. The club paid $70 for each student to attend and $10 of that is contributed to Polio Plus. With the return of Pinball Clemons as the new General Manager of the Argos he wants to reach out to the schools in the community and use his infectious personality to tackle bullying in the schools.  Chris indicated that they want to grow this event (that has been tentatively planned for Oct 31st) but we don’t know whether that will be possible in this year of COVID-19 with the launch of the Argo season June 20th being cancelled. Topics that are planned for the Rotary event include department heads and former players talking to the kids assembled.
Dave Hardy confessed that he is a great Argos fan and knows that many kids in Scarborough are challenged and need to meet mentors such as Pinball and to learn leadership skills that the MSLC can help through internships, for example.

Frank Allison thanked Chris for again bringing the club this opportunity to participate in this program.

Sergeant at Arms : Anthony Lippa (with his side-kick Christopher beside him) was invited by President to search out the membership for “Happy Thoughts”

1. Meetings will alternate between Wednesday at 1:00 pm and Wednesday at 8:00 pm But a social time will allow everyone attending to “meet” a half hour earlier. So out next meeting April 22nd will be at 1:00 pm.

2. Access to the club Facebook page was available via Kathleen.  But Maddy said that she originally set up club accounts on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter.

3. Barry will be happy to provide details of how to make donations to the Club by e-transfers.

4. Frank to phone Steve’s daughter, Theresa, to get her feedback on a suitable need for the club’s donation to honour Steve’s memory.

5.Gerd gave us a report on his Hope Air flight to Montreal and his colleague’s flight to Kapuskasing to deliver face shields and N95 respirators front line healthcare workers where supplies are needed in hospitals in these locations.

6. Gerd promised to use his “square” to donate $100 to keep the club treasury going.

7. Coutney reported on his Food Bank activities which are hampered by the stay-at-home crisis and has teamed up with Cynthia Lai and the Federation of Scarborough Asian and the Malvern and the Native Food Banks and was able to collect 3 tonnes of food last weekend. He has promised that this will not be a one-off event. Post Covid-19 there will be some challenges ahead.  He welcomed Loblaw gift cards as they are like cash and cash donations provide complete flexibility to purchase whatever is needed to stock up the Food Bank inventory.

8. Arthur reported that Group 2/3 will direct an additional $1,000 of our budget to the Food Bank needs.
Finally, President Barry signaled that the meeting was terminated but gave a shout-out to Anna Maria and Jacquline and Tony Baker who was connecting from Florida.

Next week:  Arthur has offered to bring us the state of the nation address (or at least the state of the hoped-for COVID-19 ANTI-VIRUS research activities) Check the following link for the latest.
