:

Guest Speaker:  Michael Cooksey, a long-time member of the Scarborough Rotary Club.   Introduced by Gerd.

Michael is a member of the Youth Link Board of Directors and he gave a very informative summary of the incredible work this organization has done and is still doing in the Scarborough community.

Essentially it provides free mental health counseling services for children, youth, parents, and families.

Michael provided the disturbing statistics that Canada is the third highest country in the world with youth mental health issues such as suicide and other mental health concerns.

This new shelter is at the corner of Warden Ave. and St. Clair Avenue in Scarborough.  It has 10 Emergency Beds and 41 other more permanent beds.

It develops and administrates programs for homeless people helping them to try to get back to normal lives.

There is even a Dog Kennel in the shelter for the youths.

The Clinic has regular counselors on staff providing Positive Parenting to educate parents to help everyone.

It does high school mentoring for grades 9 to 12 students.

There are 4 Outreach Consultants in the street to encourage all kids to come to the Shelter.

The Shelter has many challenges, particularly expansion.  Anyone can sponsor a new room for $5,000, at $1,000 per year.  Our club is seriously considering making a commitment to a new room.

Tony Baker thanked Michael for a terrific and eye-opening presentation concerning youth challenges in our community.

  BASIL

  • Gord Brown for three Soccer events all of which he was happy with.

  • Basil charged us all $2 for not knowing where the 2020 and 2021 Rotary International Conferences are.

  • Gerd told another “doggy” joke – “ruff”, “roof”, “Ruth”.

Marbelous Draw:

  • Conducted by Arthur after he almost lost the magic marble.

  • The winner was Peter Masson, but only for $5.00.

President Barry Smith concluded the meeting and wished everyone a great week.

A couple after an argument have stopped talking to each other.  The man goes for a nap and needs to be wakened at 5:30. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence he writes a note which says      "please wake me at 5:30."    He leaves the note where his wife will see it. He wakes at 6.15. Annoyed, he gets up to confront his wife when he sees a note on the table.  It says:   " It's 5:30. You need to get up!"

Moral:        Men are not equipped for this type of competition!
