- President Danny announced that he had secured a furnace from Lennox with an installation donated by Mersey in the GTA for auction, with the proceeds to go to the Ukrainian Refugee Support and Education Centre. The value is $7,000, and the bidding will start at $4,000. It will be offered to all Rotarians in the GTA.
President Danny introduced the speaker, Kristin Doucette, from the Scarborough Health Network. She is an onsite therapist in the Cardiac Care Unit. Kristin was Danny’s therapist who pushed him to full recovery. This in-site therapy unit serves over 3500 patients annually and is the largest in North America. It is free of charge for patients recovering from cardiovascular disease and CV events.
Kristin gave up an insightful presentation on:
- Cardiovascular disease - is the most common type of heart disease that occurs when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries making it harder for blood to flow through and, as a result, can lead to heart attack or heart failure, or heart valve disease or coronary artery disease.
- Vascular Disease – is a type of condition that affects the circulatory system. It occurs when plaque slows down or blocks blood flow in the arteries or veins that can cause diseases such as an aneurysm, varicose veins, and cerebrovascular (brain).
- Artery Disease can appear anywhere in the body where the arteries are hardened due to plaque build-up in the arteries wall, which will cause the arteries to narrow or harden and, as a result, affect the flow of blow to the heart resulting in a stroke or heart attack angina or chronic kidney disease.
Signs and symptoms of a heart attack in men and women include shortness of breath, chest pain, sweating, dizziness, and pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, arm, or shoulder.
Other signs and symptoms of a heart attack in women include unusual fatigue, lower back pain, sleep disturbance, and anxiety.
Things we can do to modify the risk of getting heart disease:
Healthy dietary choice.
Engage in physical activity. (150-300 mins cardio activity plus two days of resistance training per week)
