John is one of the foremost experts on poverty in Canada and has dedicated the greater part of the past fifty years to improving income security for all Canadians. Following a twenty-eight year career with the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services, where he held a number of positions including Senior Policy Advisor to the Social Assistance Review Committee and as an Ontario delegate to the founding of the National Child Benefit, John became an independent consultant and policy advisor. He currently sits on the national Ministerial Advisory Committee on Poverty.           In introducing him, Dave Hardy described him as one of the foremost advocates of poverty issues in Canada. He received a Paul Harris award for his contribution and sits on the Scarborough Renewal Board. He spoke to us about adult poverty among the work force (18 to 65 years old) was 7% in the GTA but 10% in Scarborough. The impact of covid19 on the poverty level and the CERB provision of funding by the Federal Government were explained. Some of the taxation policies have claw back provisions that are going to be a sticker shock next year when taxes are due. He spoke about purpose versus pedigree on the mitigation efforts by the government. There was active discussion and many questions were asked by the members. All in all it was a very informative session and Basil Diaz thanked him for his presentation.
