Toast to The King, Canada and Rotary: President Elect Basil
Land Acknowledgement: President Elect Basil
Attendance: 12 (11 Members, 1 Guest - Bette Allison, guest of Frank Allison)
Speaker: Auctioneer Alan Meredith
Introduced by: President Elect Basil turned the meeting over to Auctioneer Supreme, Alan Meredith, to conduct our annual White Elephant Auction.
Alan was provided with very few items to auction, but he did a masterful job with the 7 items provided.
Gerd was the successful bidder for a small red box that, luckily, did not contain a Jack-in-the-box, but a lovely Christmas ornament.
Tom bid on and won a cool mechanical music box set.
Other successful bidders included Arthur, who won a heavy gift bag and Gordon who won a light gift bag.
Barry won a hip flask and two shot glasses, Bette won a set of bowls, and Suresh won a cake server, but no cake.
We raised in total $170.00 from this year’s White Elephant Auction.
Second Impromptu Speaker: Suresh Agarwal
Since we had extra time, President Elect Basil asked Suresh to report on his recent trip to India.
First, Suresh reported on his visit with a representative of the Rotary Club of Gurgaon Cosmopolitan with respect to a possible twinning arrangement with our club which our International Committee will be considering. Next, Suresh visited a possible further Ekal school that our International Committee will be considering. In this rural elementary school for children aged 3-8, previous students have become teachers and returned to the school to teach. Suresh was impressed, both by this school and by the Ekal organization.
The other leg of Suresh’s journey was a family reunion. Suresh met and traveled with his 5 siblings, all of whom are now over 71 years of age. They visited several historical sites, including a university with 15,000 books that was burned at the direction of a Mongol king, and it burned for 7 days, and the Sikh temple with the golden dome which was restored with real gold. Suresh indicated that he would share pictures of his trip at a future meeting.
Thanked by: President Elect Basil
Announcements:
Gordon Brown announced a pub night next Thursday to replace our regular Wednesday luncheon. Details will be emailed.
Gerd announced that he was happy to see Bette Allison at the meeting.
Sargeant at Arms:
Sargeant at Arms Frank Allison collected Happy Bucks.
Frank donated $5
Tom found a toonie and donated it.
Suresh was happy to be home
Basil was happy to donate $54.71, which he received as a result of a mix-up when Telus took over ADT recently. He was double billed, complained, received a credit of $54.71, then he also received a cheque for $54.71. When he tried to return it, Telus told him to keep it in order to not mess up their accounting. Basil asked them if he could donate it to Rotary, and they thought that was a great idea.
As there was nothing more for the good of Rotary President Elect Basil closed the meeting.
