Announcements:
President Courtney:
Sent out information on the foundation walk and information on the water filters Steve Rutledge discussed during his presentation.
Gordon talked about the pub night and asked everyone to respond yes or no. ( Because the scribe, who is also the editor, got tied up this week, this announcement is a bit redundant. Having said that, everyone had a great time. My apologies for the delay! )
Danny asked that members bringing guests ensure a meal is offered to their guests.
Avrum introduced this week's speaker, Suzie Foreman, and her partner Andre Gordon.
Suzie is a certified sports therapist and a level 3 manual therapist.
As a physiotherapist, Suzie spoke to us about bone health, joints, posture, and gait.
Suzie was accompanied by her partner, Andre Gordon, who demonstrated using exercise bands in resistance training.
Andre is a certified personal trainer and a certified group fitness instructor with international experience. Avrum said he was at one time a candidate for a hip replacement but was referred to Suzie to see if this procedure could be avoided. Avrum's time with Suzie has helped him immensely.
It was a fascinating talk about osteoarthritis and its effect on the body. No one escapes this, but not everyone feels the symptoms. Some people, after having an MRI, could be told that they have this disease but not feel the effects. Risk factors such as being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle were outlined.
Treatment such as exercise, medication, and joint replacement was also outlined in extreme cases.
Andre demonstrated the correct use of therabands, posture, and balance during exercise.
