15 attended including the guest.

Guest was Samatha Murray.

Athem: Peter Mason

Grace: Barry Smith

Wine was being served at this meeting for no apparent reason but seemed to be enjoyed by all.

Gerd Wangler introduced the guest.

Announcements:

Mike Mushet announced he had a haircut by Rocco’s son who owns a hair salon in the beaches and this salon usually does women’s hair.

Basil Dias announced that after reviewing our options for lunch locations our best bet seems to be at JC’s since they are allowing the least amount of guaranteed guests of all or options which is to be as low as 10 people on Thursdays. A vote for this option showed most were fine with this however some regular Rotarians indicated Thursdays are hard for them. Nothing was finalized and it was suggested everyone see the location and then comment at another future meeting.

Draw: Conducted by Dave Hardy

Allan gave a happy buck

Arthur was happy to be there as he forgot to be there last week.

Gerd was happy for a power failure as he got to use his generator which generated a lot of questions from fellow Rotarians that all now want generators of their own.

Allan introduced the Guest speaker Saifoo who talked about the retirement homes in Scarborough – and overall status of retirement communities and populations.

He started out thanking us for the contribution towards the BBQ that is being hosted by the Rosewood Community Services group on June 1, 2018 which has three other groups working together for this event.

Saifoo indicted that he belongs to a group similar to person to person business networking groups out there and this one is call B2B which stands for business to business. This group focuses on getting information out to the public in places like the public library helping seniors educate themselves on their options.

After a legal disclaimer Saifoo gave us some staggering facts and statistics about the population and situation surrounding retirement. He also gave us details about six different types of retirement homes available for the average retiree.

The Stats Say that:

More than 1 out of every 6 people in Canada are over the age of 64 as of July 2015

More Canadians are 64 and over than under the age of 15

As of July 1 2015 our population sat at 35 million, 9.1 million (51-70 years old), 6.8 million are seniors (60+)

51% carry debt into retirement

50% will run out of money within 10 years

Saifoo went on to give brief details about the 6 types of Senior homes available in Canada:

1. Subsidized Seniors Housing

2. Long Term Care/Nursing Homes

3. Retirement Homes

4. Life Lease Housing

5. Resale Senior Condos

6. Resale Condos

He gave some details about the pros and cons of each type and afterwards there were some questions regarding the Resale Senior Condos which seemed to be of interest to our group.

Overall there is a great deal of options depending upon budget and needs.

There was quite a bit of information in his seminar and there was not enough time to tackle the whole presentation.

He offered to come back on another day and finish up the presentation with us. As well he offered to bring to the group information he called “steps to effective planning for retirement” for the Rotary group to use for their own retirement plans.

Allen thanks Saifoo for his presentation and gave him a Rotary glass for doing it for the group.
