Speaker: Sanjay Gokal – Building Champions Through Martial Arts

Speaker’s Notes: The Rotary Club of North Scarborough was pleased to welcome Sanjay Gokal, a martial arts instructor with Northern Karate School, as our guest speaker.

Sanjay began by thanking the Club for the invitation to speak. He reflected on his own experiences with Rotary while living in India, where he demonstrated self-defence techniques through Rotary-related initiatives. Those experiences led to invitations from several school principals to teach basic self-defence, confidence-building, and resilience skills to girls in schools.

A central theme of Sanjay's presentation was his commitment to helping children see themselves as champions. He emphasized that every child has the potential to succeed and that the key is identifying the pathways that enable them to overcome life's challenges. By developing resilience, self-confidence, and perseverance, young people can build the mindset needed to achieve their goals.

Sanjay also spoke about the important role of coaches, teachers, and mentors in recognizing potential. He encouraged leaders to look beyond immediate performance to identify hidden talent and to develop strategies that nurture those abilities so individuals can reach their full potential.

Turning to health and wellness, Sanjay recommended yoga and Tai Chi as excellent activities for older adults, noting their benefits for flexibility, balance, and overall well-being. At the same time, he stressed that it is never too late to learn practical self-defence skills. To illustrate this point, he demonstrated a simple yet effective self-defence technique that could be used by older adults in everyday situations.

Throughout his presentation, Sanjay emphasized that martial arts is about training both the mind and the body. He explained that the discipline fosters confidence, resilience, focus, and respect, while physical training improves strength and fitness. Combined with healthy eating habits, he believes these practices can contribute to healthier, less stressful, and more fulfilling lives.

Sanjay's engaging presentation, practical demonstrations, and inspiring message about resilience, lifelong learning, and developing human potential were well received by Club members and prompted thoughtful discussion following his remarks.

Sanjay was thanked by Mike
