Toast to The King, Canada and Rotary: Danny Cassidy
Attendance: (9 members, 1 guest speaker)
Speaker: Kari Peters – Team 188 Woburn Robotics Lead Staff Advisor:
Kari was introduced by Gordon.
Kari gave some history of the Robotics programs and other programs inspired by its success. There are now three such specialized career-focused programs for Grade 11 and 12 students. The components of these programs include co-operative education opportunities, experiential learning, and sector partnering. For example, the health-based program partners with the Scarborough Health Network which allows the students with access to co-operative learning at the Scarborough Centennial campus.
Team 188 Woburn Robotics was established in 1996, and its rookie year was 1998. It was the first Canadian team to join the competition in the U.S., making the competition international. The Team 188 name means that they were the 188th team to compete in this international robotics competition.
Every January, a new game is released, and each team has 6 weeks to build their robot competitor, which includes design, prototype, manufacture and coding.
In the 2025 season, Team 188 was the event winner at the Centennial College competition. Team 188 also competed in the McMaster Creativity Award competition. In the Provincial Championships, Team 188 won the Gracious Professionalism Award. In the World Championships, Team 188 was ranked 14 out of the 75 Canadian teams that competed. In total, 600 teams competed in Houston at the World Championships.
Through these specialized programs, the students develop a wide range of transferrable skills and learn how to navigate success and failure. They compete against the best in the world, providing them with invaluable real-world skills.
Kari thanked the club for our generous support in the past.
