Announcements:
· Carolyn Nicholson announced that there will be a Group 2/3 Meeting on September 9th at Peter Masson’s. Camp Enterprise is confirmed for October 18, 19 & 20th. Sign-up sheets will be sent out to engage all club members in the great service project. Carolyn also reminded the club that Group 2/3 is looking for touchy, feely good projects within the local community, and invited members to bring such causes to her attention.
· Past-President Jacob reminded the club of the importance of the up-coming TV Auction, and urged everyone to start soliciting and bringing in items. Auction packages were handed out to all attending members, and others are available to be picked up. Past President Dave Hardy suggested that we use airmiles or aeroplan points to purchase auction goods.
The marbelous draw was conducted by Gordon Brown. The winning ticket was claimed by late arrival David Seemungal, but the mutant marble lives another day.
Sergeant-at-arms Charles Whitney fined all members who had forgotten the name of the current R.I. President. The coffers were filled by those with short memories. Many happy bucks were contributed, including a sad buck from Gerd for having his guest rescheduled by Dorothy.
Speaker: Laura Colangelo
President Rocco introduced his granddaughter, Laura Colangelo, who gave a very interesting and informative report on her recent Adventures in Citizenship in our Capital, Ottawa. This dynamic young lady kept us spell-bound with her adventures, including “crying when she left home and crying when she left Ottawa”. We heard of the initial race to catch the train to Ottawa, meeting the very welcoming host family, getting to know 218 other students from all across Canada, and hearing such outstanding speakers such as “Ray” from the organization “From Impossible to Possible”.
Laura told of visiting the Museum of Civilization, touring the Parliament buildings and meeting parliamentarians, meeting the Ambassadors from the Netherlands and South Korea as well as three Canadian Diplomats, and Touring the University of Ottawa. We heard of the mock parliament elections and the campaigning conducted by the students, and finally having the opportunity to welcome new citizens to Canada.
Laura will be heading off to the University of Ottawa shortly to study Political Science, and we all wish her well. Frank Allison thanked Laura and presented her with a Certificated from Operation Eyesight.
A recording of Laura’s presentation will be sent separately.
