Sergeant-at-Arms: Basil Dias requested a loonie or toonie from anyone who didn’t know where the Foundation Walk is being held this year – the answer being Bowmanville.
Jim Boyko gave some happy bucks for being happy seeing Fran Smith at his ‘dockside party’ last Friday. Several other members contributed to the pot as well for being able to see Fran at the party.
Speaker: Basil then introduced our speaker David Lockhart from PACT. David is a member of the Toronto Parkdale Club and one of the founders of PACT. Our club has given a donation to them for about the last ten years. For information on PACT you can visit their website www.pactprogram.ca.
David told us that PACT’s objective was to take young offenders and try and get them ‘back on the right track’ before they become adults by early intervention. He advised that there are about 750 young offenders in Toronto and they account for about 80% of related police time. PACT has a Life Plan Coaching program where young offenders are matched with Certified Life Coaches for 18 months. In 2010 21 kids were put through the program with a 43% success rate. PACT’s goal going forward is to put 50 youths through the program every year for the next 5 years. If they are able to do this then it could save the government about $250k.
Carolyn thanked David for speaking to us and presented him with a certificate confirming the restoration of a persons eyesight in India. Rocco then presented David with a cheque for $4,000 being our donation for this year. David thanked the club.
(An audio of David’s presentation has been e-mailed separately.)
