Announcements:
● Gerd Wengler again thanked the members for the support received for the Bruce Trail 50 km walkathong fundraiser that he finished. (It almost finished Gerd too!)
The club’s support has been duly recorded in the Bruce Trail magazine that North Scarborborough Rotary’s participation as a sponsor.
● Gordon Brown has given notice of a Pub Night now being planned for September 11th in Pickering at The Fox Runs Free.
● Kevin Manuel brought to our attention that the Rotary TV Auction needs many additions to the donations for that auction in November. None of the items so far received have come from our club and he is hoping for a significant increase in our club’s donations this year. We have been far below what has been achieved in the past. This year he wants at least 160 items to be donated by our club members.
Marbelous Draw:
After two tickets were drawn (the holder of the first one remains anonymous) Jim Boyko’s was the winning ticket ... but for only $5 which he promptly returned for recyling.
Sergeant at Arms:
Gordon Brown was kind to-day and only called for “happy bucks”
● Mandy’s birthday was noted with a chorus of Happy Birthday and Peter’s for his last Sunday, August 24th. Arthur also confessed that he too has another birthday but on August 28th.
● Emmanuel has a new job (details to follow)
● Gerd for surviving a fitness assessment (we thought that the Bruce Trail 50 km challenge should have proved him fit ... at least for hiking).
Program:
Our District Governor was introduced by ADG Raffy Chouljian. Raffy outlined Brian Thompson’s 30 years as a Rotarian leading from many roles in his Whitby club onto those at the District level and now as District Governor. He was born in Toronto, attended U of T and graduated as a P. Eng. in mechanical engineering. His several interests include flying, video production for education and training as well as his previous career in the nuclear energy industry with Ontario Power Corp, much of it in public relations.
He brings his own experiences with Rotary and the challenge given all Rotarians by Rotary International’s President Gary Huang to “Light up Rotary” as this year’s motto indicates on his banner and on pins which were handed out to all members.
We need to keep growing Rotary membership. Worldwide we have been stalled at 1.2 million members for years. We have many strengths through leadership in the 34,000 communities that our clubs serve and through our clubs’ interconnectedness. When a challenge is taken up as it was in 1985 to free the world of Polio. We are almost there so perseverance has brought us so close to that reality.
