Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Chair – Jacob Lakirovich
O Canada – Frank Allison
Grace – David Seemungal
Attendance – 17 Rotarians + our guest speaker Igor + Chan and Dayna Seemungal (guests of David) + Beverly (guest of Basil and long time friend of the club)
Announcements were many:
1. Peter Masson – The Scarborough Rotary Clubs PR Committee will be leading an outreach and information effort on World Polio Day, Wednesday, October 24. We will be visiting several GO Stations in and around Scarborough to hand out info to morning commuters on Rotary’s efforts along with our partners to eradicate polio. Please see Peter if you can lend a hand.
2. Jack Holman – George Cushnie’s two granddaughters, Kally and Julie, are living and working for one year in Guatemala. Kally teaches English, History and Spanish to at-risk children, and would like to lead them in some extra-curricular activities, for which she has no resources. Jack will match any donation from the club up to $1,000. Basil made a motion which was unanimously supported to donate $1,000 from Group 4 funds, which means that this worthwhile project will receive $2,000 in support from our club.
3. Charles Whitney – reminded us to please get your auction items in, and asked team captains to get a tally for next week’s meeting.
4. Basil Dias – His guest Beverly asked him to thank the club once again for our support of at-risk students we supported in previous years.
5. Jacob Lakirovich – We have a very informative meeting coming up on October 31 teaching us something of 5,000 years of Chinese history. Please plan to attend and invite a guest. Costume is optional
Marbelous draw, led by Charles Whitney, $5 won by Jack Holman. It was great to see jack back and doing well after eye surgery.
Sergeant at Arms, the very grumpy Alan Meredith. If you don’t believe me I give you examples:
· He snapped at his capable and lovely assistant Charles, instructing him to pick up the box and start extracting large quantities of money from fellow Rotarians
· He charged birthday boy David $10 for the privilege of being born. It was surprising that he didn’t also fine David’s mother who was sitting right beside him.
· Al seemed a little miffed that last week’s SAA Barry fined him in spite of his get out of jail free card, and this week fined everyone who was without such a card $5.
· He then fined anyone who has yet to bring in any items for the auction another $2.
· It is hard to believe that there was any happiness in Mudville at this point, but several happy bucks were thrown into the pot.
· Danny summed it all up nicely by finishing proceedings off by giving the last loonie he had in his pocket, and perhaps in his bank account also!
Mike Mushet introduced our guest speaker, fellow York grad Igor Klibanov. Mike told us that Igor has a degree in Kinesiology, which is phys ed in layman’s terms. Igor’s presentation was on Facts and Fallacies of Fitness. Mike suggested that given the current disrepair of our health care system we should all pay attention. Igor held everyone’s attention as he told us that the keys to weight loss in order of importance are Nutrition, Resistance Training (weights) and Cardio. He told us that our diets should consist of zero calorie drinks, and our 5 – 6 meals a day should consist of one serving of protein, one serving of vegetables and one serving of healthy fat. Al asked about the efficacy of drinking red wine. Igor informed him that it was not particularly a health benefit, and we thought Al was grumpy before the presentation! Several Rotarians signed up for Igor’s health newsletter, and Peter Masson thanked him for his excellent presentation.
Jacob Lakirovich adjourned the meeting.
