December 19, 2012

Acting Chair: V.P. Rocco Colangelo

Anthem: Peter Masson

Grace: Mike Mushet

Attendance: 21 (including 6 guest spouses, being Lillian Colangelo, Judy Hardy, Joan Masson, Cheryl Meredith, Lori Moore, and Glennys Smith)

Announcements:

- President Jacob could not attend, but conveyed his Christmas wishes through Acting Chair Rocco.

- Peter Masson announced that the Fireside would be held on April 19th, 2013 at the Highland Yacht Club.  Details to follow in due course.

- Jim Boyko reminded us of the end of the world on Friday, and asked everyone to deliver their valuables to him prior to then, since they will have no further need for them.

- Kevin Moore introduced his date, Lori, who has a birthday to-day but no confession was forthcoming.

- Al Meredith reminded us to bring wrapped gifts to the next meeting on January 9th, 2013 for the White Elephant Auction.

The Marbelous Draw was conducted by Barry Smith who thought he was choosing an honest Pastor’s wife to pull the winning ticket, until she pulled her husband’s ticket. Kevin Moore won, and lost, the draw after having Lori try her magic touch at pulling out the mutant marble.

Sgt-at-Arms Al Meredith levied some not so cheerful fines and took in lots of loonies from everyone not wearing a tie and not wearing their Rotary pins.

Jim Boyko was fined for trying to fleece everyone of their valuables.

Jack Holman pointed out that there were only 7 Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free cards purchased, but that he’d seen about 22 in play. Obviously, we don’t have a ‘Monopoly’ on issuing these cards.

Kevin was fined for gambling.

Gerd donated $5 for leaving early, but wished everyone a Merry Christmas on his way out the door.

Frank Allison was happy to see Steve Zielinski out at the meeting.

Steve donated ten happy bucks. He had arrived in a tie, but removed it, to feel more at home with  our casual crowd.

Dave Hardy told the story about his partner’s crazy cousin Chris who, since a young age, told everyone that he would be an astronaut some day.  Guess what? Crazy Chris blasted into space today on a mission that will see him become the first Canadian astronaut to command the International Space Station.

Program:

Vice President Rocco introduced Kevin Moore who conducted our traditional Christmas luncheon, consisting of the singing of Christmas carols as accompanied by Lori Moore on guitar, and interspersed with various Christmas information, such as the origin of  “Silent Night” and the amount of Christmas merchandise imported by the U.S. from China. Kevin also played a clip from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special... a timeless production.

Kevin noted that not everyone’s Christmas will be happy, including those in Newtown, Connecticut who are taking down Christmas decorations in the face of the unspeakable tragedy that has devastated their town. Kevin reminded us of John 1:5 which states: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. There is hope as long as the light is not overcome by the darkness. Kevin suggested that the work of Rotary is to make a difference in this world by keeping the darkness at bay.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All !

Jack Holman thanked Kevin and Lori for a very enjoyable meeting and presented them with two scotch glasses, oops, that should be two punch glasses.

Meeting was terminated
