Marbelous Draw:
Was conducted by Charles, our guest Jagdish drew the winning ticket which was claimed by Al Meredith, but he was unable to find the mutant marble.
Sergeant-at-Arms Joan asked three Rotary questions:
1. She gave us two different numbers of just over 1.2million and asked us which the correct number of worldwide Rotarians is. Those who chose the wrong answer had to pay up.
2. What is the month of August in the Rotary calendar? The answer being Membership month and Extension month.
3. Who are the two prominent lady Rotarians mentioned in the Rotarian magazine associated with the eradication of polio – one being a Doctor the other being a Queen? (Dr. Jane Goodall and Queen Noor of Jordan)
Boy did Joan clean up to-day!
Happy Bucks:
Peter Masson was pleased that he enjoyed and survived his sail across Lake Ontario to Wilson N.Y. and back last week. Mike Mushet enjoyed his trip to an air show in Wisconsin – he tried to find Gerd but was unable to locate him among the 10,000 aircraft there.
Program: PACT
Carolyn introduced David Lockett from PACT (Participation, Acknowledgement, Commitment & Transformation). David gave us a brief overview of PACT’s coaching program which was started 12 years ago. There are 42 youths in the program from “Belleville to Brampton”. Apparently there is a window for youths between ages 16 to 18 to try and get them out of the justice system and then if they don’t have any offences after 18 they can request that their juvenile record can be expunged, otherwise their juvenile criminal record will be attached to their adult record and then cannot be expunged.
David then introduced one of the coaches, Clayton Elliott. Clayton is 29 now, but was in the justice system in his mid-teens. He has been working with PACT for the last 18 months as a coach. Because of his past he is able to relate to the youths he works with very well and is presently working with four of them. He told us that a lot of them have a feeling of hopelessness and it is very gratifying to work with them and help give them a hopeful future. For more information on PACT: www.pactprogram.ca.
A recording of the presentation will be sent separately. Dave Hardy thanked David and Clayton for their presentation and presented them a cheque for $4,000 for the club’s ongoing support of their program.
There being no further business President Rocco closed the meeting.
