-Fred Mandryk of the Bowmanville club brought us greetings and reminded us of the District 7070 Foundation “Walk the Talk” Sunday September 23 in Bowmanville. Turn left on Concession St. W, then take 2nd street on left onto Beech St. #28 is on the right.
This is the last time that a single club will sponsor the Foundation Walk. In future a grouping of clubs will team up to put on the annual Walk.
Two routes will be planned to start at 10:00 am. Route A, the Town Route will be a gentle walk through historic downtown Bowmanville. Total length 2.59 km. Route B- Bowmanville Valley is slightly more strenuous and passes through a more “wilderness” and rural setting during a 6.5 km walk. Lunch will be served between 11:30 and 1:00 pm.
The club has set a goal of $125,000 to be raised for the Foundation through participation by all the clubs in District 7070.
-Basil Dias reported that several of our members attended an organizing meeting of the Metro Toronto Rotary TV Auction. He reminded all that the Auction will be held one week earlier this year and that the “drop dead” date for donations has been set for November 1st. The paperwork has been put together for all members to get out and solicit donations and sponsorships.
-Charles Whitney (while absent to-day) asked that all who wished to go to the Wine and Dinner paring at the Hunt Club Sept 7th please respond to the Club Runner invitation that was sent out last week.
MARBELOUS DRAW:
The number of marbles left in the bag had diminished to a scant number. Tickets were purchased in many multiples that increased the take considerably. The last person to enter join the meeting bought his ticket and it was pulled we all wondered whether the box-full of ticket stubs really had been shaken. Well, they had by young Ms. Seemungal and the winning ticket was pulled by her grandmother. Frank Allison reached in and voila he pulled out the mutant marble.
We have a photo of Frank as he realized he was the winner. A cheque for $433 as his winnings.
SERGEANT AT ARMS:
Basil took over the duties to-day and let us off with just happy bucks.
Gerd Wengler was pleased to report on his meeting with “the most powerful woman in the world” according to Forbes magazine, Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, during her recent two day stay in Ottawa. Gerd was there in his role of Chairman of the Canadian German Chamber of Commerce. Gerd didn’t get any inside info on the EU euro muddle will be resolved.
Not bad for a one-time physical chemist to become top dog in the world of Hillary Clinton, Melinda Gates, Lady Gaga and Marissa Mayer (Yahoo)!
PROGRAM:
In the absence of Dave Hardy, Peter Masson introduced Don Crane of Hatch Mott MacDonald, Engineering Consultants. Dave Hardy’s firm have partnered with H.M.M on several projects. Don presented a slide show which focussed on developing solutions for several projects in the GTA which involved their expertise in waste water, water, tunnelling and site development. We all were impressed with the thorough research required both with the nearby communities and with the environmental issued that these projects present.
Don’s remarks were longer than usual so they will be sent out as mp3 files in several parts. But go to the HMM website www.hatchmott.com for a truly eye-opening view of their work in North America and beyond.
