TV Auction & Rota-Teller
Thank you to all who were bidders and all who contributed to making this year's Rotary TV Auction a success. We especially wish to thank Rogers TV and their staffers who spend many hours bringing the auction to all of the City of Toronto.
And, of course, there would be no auction without the contributions made by so many businesses and individuals and the sponsors and volunteers who helped to put the show on.
Next year, we hope to have Toronto Maple Leaf hockey tickets available .... if you think that they will have an agreement before the 2013 season starts! Stay tuned. Rotarians don't go on strike! We work tirelessly to alleviate the needs in our community and overseas.

Announcements:
Christmas Party:
We were reminded about the Club’s famous Christmas party to be held Friday December 14th at the Scarboro Golf & Country Club. Priced at $55 pp.Carolyn Nicholson wants all to respond to her invitation on Club Runner.
Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra
Jacob reminded us that the SPO will be performing on Saturday evening Dec. 1st, 8:00pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, 2021 Lawrence E. (Free underground parking is off Warden).
The program is entitled “Festive Music from Around the World” with Howard Cable conductor. This is the SPO’s opportunity to showcase beloved Holiday music from around the globe.Marbelous Draw:
Mike Muchet was the maestro of the marble bags to-day and Jim Boyko not only drew the winning ticket but discovered that he also held the other part of the winning ticket. But the $5 consolation prize was all that was awarded to Jim.
Sergeant at Arms
Barry Smith
fined anyone not wearing their Rotary pins and most of those delinquents flashed their “get out of jail free” cards to frustrate Barry’s effort to fill the fine box.
Happy bucks were then asked for:
Jim Boyko and Jacob contributed for their 2 pleasant weeks away in Florida and Jamaica respectively.
But Jacob reported that there was a 2 hour delay in his return flight and while in transit a very inebriated and rude couple had to be silenced by the plane’s officers who threatened them with an emergency stop and removal in Florida in the event that they didn’t change their behavior. The rest of the plane’s passengers applauded that welcome act of emergency management.
Alan Meredith had a similar experience and delay when a passenger who was sick was removed, together with his family, before their plane could take off.
Gerd reported that a van full of football equipment had been shipped to Mexico to compliment the donation that Al Meredith had arranged last year.
Program:
No program had previously been arranged but our past president and TV Auction Chair, Charles Whitney, took this opportunity to summarize what he knew about the auction that had taken place the prior weekend.
First, everyone applauded the very professional efforts of Kevin Manuel in being key to the auction’s success. (We wish he could have heard the applause. But he was still recovering from his strenuous efforts or was trying to get his architectural practice back in business!) But his mother heard the applause and that made her proud.
Second, Charles thanked all who showed up to help throughout the 3 days and had taken their part in making the auction a success, The numbers have yet to be determined, but we should realize 50% of the posted value of the contributions. Thus about $17,000 from the auction plus another $14,000 in cash and sponsorships. This should mean our take will be about the same as last year. We had just under 200 items contributed to the auction but we can do better next year. If NHL hockey is back in business next year, we should be able to add another $4,000 to the proceeds.
Third. There was a discussion about phone problems that occurred during Saturday which will be passed on to Kevin and the auction organizers in due course.
Next meeting:
David Seemungal will share with us his recent research on the financial state of affairs for Canada and the ROW.
