Program:
Basil Dias introduced our Guest Speaker Dr. Ravi Retnakanaran, son of our very own Arthur Retnakaran.
Dr. Retnakaran gave a very enlightening presentation on “New Strategies for the Treatment of TYPE 2 Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus = DM)”.
DM is caused by genetic as well as environmental factors that lead to the diminished production of insulin by the beta cells in the pancreas. The incidence has grown to epidemic proportions thanks to our modern lifestyle contributing to obesity in all demographics of the world. As a result, the insulin produced is insufficient to counter higher levels of blood glucose, leading to DM and its complications. It could also be caused by resistance to Insulin.
The new strategy as launched by Dr. Retnakaran and his colleague at the Mount Sinai Hospital through the ‘RESET-IT’ program aims to offer Insulin Therapy much earlier rather than later upon diagnosis to stem the deterioration of the Beta cells. This could induce a ‘remission’.
Risk factors include: Cardio Vascular (heart and stroke). End-stage kidney disease, Blindness and Non-traumatic lower limb amputation.
Please listen to the recording for a much better low-down on the latest treatments.

Jim Boyko echoed the sentiments of all present in thanking the speaker for presenting such complex but very useful information in a manner that the simplest amongst us (???) could follow and presented him with a certificate for restoration of eyesight for a woman in India, funded by our club.
Reminders: Next week is Directors’ Reports.
